Five Fast Facts: Fiona Grey on Finding Safety in Queer Clubs and Unleashing Her Alter Ego 'Daisy' in New Single "Call Me Daisy"

After experiencing sexual assault, Fiona found safety in queer clubs. Her latest single, “Call Me Daisy,” captures the way she reconnected with pure, uninhibited joy after experiencing something traumatic. The song introduces listeners to Daisy, an alter ego born from the need to escape and reclaim her identity. "Call Me Daisy" is about the freedom of losing yourself on the dance floor, embracing anonymity, and finding power in being the stranger within. This track is the prelude to her highly anticipated album, , set to drop in March of 2025. If this single is any indication, we’re in for fierce beats and unapologetic anthems. And as we gear up for the upcoming election, "Call Me Daisy" is a reminder of how important it is to protect queer spaces. Fiona’s talent for turning her life’s roller coasters into relatable pop bangers is what makes her a standout in today’s music landscape.

1. SJ: You’ve played on many stages across Manchester, and London, and toured alongside Charli XCX and Foals. What was the biggest lesson you learned from tour, and touring with such prominent acts?

FG: The biggest lesson I learned is to play the same show no matter how big the stage is or how prominent the other acts are. I think it’s so important to always give stadium-level performances no matter how big or small the show might be.

2. SJ: After experiencing sexual assault, you found safety with queer clubs, and eventually created an alter ego “Daisy,” allowing you to escape reality and reclaim your identity. What did being a part of those queer clubs mean to you, and how did it allow you to regain your confidence?

FG: I think queer communities and clubs strive to make environments that you feel safe in because so many marginalized people don’t feel as safe in more heterosexual environments. For me, regaining my confidence started with feeling safe in my environment and finding places that allowed me to be a new version of myself.

3. SJ: You just released your single "Call Me Daisy." What did the songwriting process look like for this song?

FG: It happened so quick. A rare experience where the song just flew out of me. I co-wrote it with a close friend and collaborator, Matt Bernstein, who I feel so comfortable with. Subjects like this I wouldn’t write with just anyone but I was thinking about a conversation I had with my therapist and we were having coffee before the session and I opened up to him about it. "Call Me Daisy" is the result of that.

4. SJ: This track is upbeat, fun, and overall has great energy. What did your recording process look like? Did you work closely with any producers on this song?

FG: We started production in Rome and ended up finishing it in LA. It was an interesting process mostly because we ended up stripping some of the production down later in the process to make sure it still had a rough edge. One of my biggest goals is for my songs to have the feeling of my live performance. I’m really happy with how it turned out.

5. SJ: What message do you hope your music and this specific song shares?

FG: I hope that my music makes you dance to the good and bad moments of your life.

SJ: What is one song you wish Fiona Grey wrote?

FG: "Moonage Daydream" - Bowie

SJ: What’s next for Fiona Grey?

FG: My debut album, and finally, getting back to live shows and touring.

SJ: Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us!

FG: Thank you for having me!
