It's your dose of Monday Motivation from The MIC Mag's Musicians of the Month: Advice for Independent Artists Vol. IV!
Every month we ask our Musicians of the Month, "What advice do you have for aspiring independent artists?"
They're always sharing such insightful responses, and we thought this week we'd share them with you for a little ~Monday Motivation!~
MØNTE
"My advice for future aspiring independent artists is to just go for it, a lot of people will try to teach you how to be "successful" but the only true way to be a successful independent artist is to make good art and maybe a dash of luck or magic. And "good art" is totally subjective, art is subjective, so if you believe in your art you might find other people do too." - MØNTE

Jay Johnson
"Never stop learning, never stop growing, and never stop having fun. Spread love and joy with what you play. Give more than you take, appreciate the space, and leave things better than you found them. Our job is to make people feel something, which is a beautiful responsibility. So make it genuine, and make them feel whatever you have to share." - Jay Johnson

Your Best Nightmare
"Be boldly independent, but don't be afraid to lean on the people that wholeheartedly support what you're doing once in a while. I manage all of the business of Your Best Nightmare independently, but the friends I have in the group and the friends we've made through recording and performing are what keep me sane. They pick up what I put down musically, and they keep me laughing. Being an independent musician doesn't mean you have to be alone, whether you're a solo performer or a band. Find the people that you truly vibe with, and keep them close."

The Nightly Noodle
"Some advice I'd give to aspiring independent musicians is to just be yourself. Stop trying to sound like your favorite band, stop trying to dress like your favorite artist. Be authentic to yourself.. and double down on it. No one will be able to replicate you because of how unique we all are. Once you accept that and lean into it, it's game over. Doors open and opportunities come flying it." - The Nightly Noodle

The Break Plans
"You have to ask yourself, why are you a musician? Who are you doing it for? What do you want to get out of it? When I ask myself these questions the answer is always, I do it for me. Because I love it. I love and we love making music. If you start playing music because the end goal is you want to be famous then you're doing it for all of the wrong reasons. We started this band because we finally found people that liked the same kinds of music, which is rare. We were finally able to create something that sounded cohesive and not a mish-mash of seven different genres. Luckily some other people started to like what we were making and it organically has grown. So with that said, as a musician nothing is an overnight success. You have to look at music as a slow climb and find milestones in everything you do. Look back year to year of where you were and where you are now and as long as you are persistent you will definitely feel satisfied in what you're doing."
