Preparing Your Pitch: What Should Be in Your Press Folder as an Indie Artist?

So you have a new music release, yay! But, you want people to hear it. If you're looking to make the biggest splash with your music, you need to get the word out.

Sure, you can reach out on your own social platforms, have your mom write a cute post on her Facebook page about how proud she is of you, but if you want to truly amplify your reach, you need press!

Press, is so often ignored and forgotten about by indie artists. Sometimes, it's even thought to be a waste of time. Although you might have to invest in it, it's a necessary step for an indie artist to include in their release rollout!

From press releases, to press folders, let's talk about how to tailor your best pitch, as an independent artist!

First Things First!

Okay, first things first, who are we pitching to? Something every indie artist should have in their toolkit is a spreadsheet dedicated to press, and to continue to update it. This can help you organize outlets that you'd like to pitch to, outlets you have pitched to, if they've responded, direct contact name, best email to use, and prices.

Once you have this spreadsheet, you won't have to waste time with each release deciding where you should pitch your song to, because you'll have all approved outlets in one place. And, all of these outlets are already vetted by you, so you know they could be a great fit for you, and your music!

Next, Press Release:

Why a press release? A press release is a great document to send, to get the word out about your latest release, and many outlets will ask you for one. If you're looking to get press for any new release, it's a good (and makes you look professional) idea to make one. But, especially if you're about to release your debut album, have a new music video, or have another exciting announcement to make! This you can send to bloggers, journalists, local press outlets, playlist curators, and anybody else you want to tell about your exciting release!

Things to include in your Press Release:

  • Release date of your song, EP, album, and/or music video

  • Catchy headline. Who doesn't love a catchy headline?

  • High-quality image of the band/artist

  • Information on the new release, and why they should care! Make it interesting!

  • Background information about the artist. Put your best foot forward here, and make it engaging!

  • Impressive things the artist has done: tour, high streaming numbers, headliner, etc.

  • Quotes from the artist about the new release!

  • Song streaming links

  • Music video link if applicable

  • Social media links, where to find the artist!

  • Artist website

  • Press contact: whether that be a manager, PR contact, or the artist themselves. They should know who they can get in contact with if they'd like to learn more, or schedule an interview.

  • Quotes from someone else saying something great about the record: If you have a review out already with a stellar quote, include it!

  • Anything else upcoming, impressive, or incredible you have on the horizon

Press Folder:

It's got it all! Nobody should be asking for any more information after this because you've literally already sent it all.

What's in the press folder?

  • Your amazing press release

  • Song lyrics

  • .wav file

  • Song credits

  • Band/Artist Bio: and make sure it's either rewritten or refreshed for each release!

  • Multiple high-quality press images + photo credits

  • Album artwork + photo credits

  • Music video and/or music video link if applicable

Email Pitch:

Now you're all set! You're ready to send it off! An email pitch should be short and sweet, and shouldn't drag on. Say hi, introduce yourself, tell them you have a new release, include a streaming or Soundcloud link of said release, and then attach the press folder. Because of all of the large files in the folder, it's best to include this as either a Google Drive or Dropbox link. Everything the outlet should need to know about you and your new release, should be in that folder, so there's no need to add any extra, and unnecessary fluff for them to read in your email.

TIP: Here's a few great mistakes to avoid while pitching your release!

That's it! Good luck, and happy pitching!

Long Story Short: Streamlining your pitch makes your life easier, and the outlet your pitching to! A more concise pitch shows your professionalism and that you're serious, making an outlet more inclined to write about you!
