At 21 years old, New Jersey native Russell J. Murray is developing his own innovative sound. Though acting is his primary passion, Murray has long been captivated by music, seamlessly blending metalcore, hardcore, and screamo-trap influences into a unique melodic speed/death metal style. As the vocalist of his band, he delivers intense and heartfelt lyrics with a powerful vocal performance, showcasing his diverse inspirations and distinguishing himself in both his acting and musical ventures. While his previous release, "Existence Futile," featured dramatic, poetic lyricism, let’s explore his latest track, "Shallow."
Russell Murray’s latest single, "Shallow," confronts the harrowing emotions of manipulation and gaslighting with intense vigor. Inspired by both his own experiences and those of people close to him, Murray felt a personal drive to finish and share this song after a close friend fell victim to similar manipulative behaviors. He explains, "I wrote this song not just because of past experiences I’ve had with being gaslit and manipulated but for all of the people I know who have been victims of this. The main drive I had when writing this was hearing a good close of mine had just fell victim to the same thing which was like the final straw for me to finish this song and share it."

The track opens with a powerful blend of driving rhythmic drums and distorted guitars, creating a muddy, aggressive tone that sets the stage for the song’s dark atmosphere. Murray, who utilized FL Studio Mobile to compose, perform, mix, and master the track entirely on his own, delivers pointed lyrics that cut deep: “Hypnotize your prey/The Victim card you love to play/Lips laced with poison/Gaslighting tongue.”
"This song is one of the most personal things I've put out to the public." - Russell Murray
As "Shallow" progresses, its lyrics and vocal lines take on a rhythmic quality, especially noticeable in the chorus, enhancing the track’s emotional impact. The track brims with anger and animosity, reflected in lines like, “You revel in the pain that you inflict...Pretend you’re a flower but you’re just the thorns.” Around the 2:07 mark, a grooving bass line emerges with building instrumentation, while the drums hit with such speed they sound like a machine gun.
LONG STORY SHORT: Murray describes "Shallow" as one of the most personal releases he’s ever shared, emphasizing the palpable energy and angst that permeate the song. With screamo influences evident in the vocal lines, "Shallow" is a compelling addition to Murray’s discography, showcasing his signature intensity and emotional depth.
