Starcoast, Virginia Beach's celestial collective, are back, releasing their second EP, "We Three." Together, Tom Hunter, Jim Hunter, and David Johns wrote, recorded and mixed the EP as a self-reflection and recollection of their last year. Currently, Starcoast just embarked on their 11-date U.K. and Ireland tour, including local bands from each community. But here's the 'long story short' and a few words from Starcoast about each track on each track!
1. "Can't Pretend"
Guitar/Vocals - Tom Hunter
Bass/Harmonies - Jim Hunter
Drums/Percussion - David Johns
In the words of Starcoast: "The basis of the track was written in about 30 minutes over an impromptu jam that happened before taking a trip. It's really one of those songs that write themselves which have the best vibes. The song is about being direct and honest about feelings which makes sense for how natural the music felt to write."
LONG STORY SHORT: "Can't Pretend" is a classic indie alternative rock track that is perfected with a screaming guitar solo at 2:10. The lyrics delve into frozen moments in time with lyrics like, "Then we locked eyes/And I'm frozen there/As all the people walk on by…We talked all night/In that room alone/And know we finally got this right."
2. "Window"
Guitar/Vocals - Tom Hunter
Bass/Harmonies - Jim Hunter
Drums/Percussion - David Johns
In the words of Starcoast: "This one is so much fun for us to play with all the tempo changes. It's about self-acceptance and living life the way you want to. The chorus line, "When you find a pile of roses on your tombstone, will you feel the life you lived here was your own?" really sums the whole thing up!"
LONG STORY SHORT: "Window" is deep. Aside from the chorus line, it also tackles self-awareness and identity, offering advice like, "Don't wallow/In everything you let go…Go ahead and breathe again." The track also blends both gentle and more aggressive verses kicking on the distortion to reflect the lyrics.
3. "Juxtaposition"
Guitar/Vocals - Tom Hunter
Bass/Harmonies - Jim Hunter
Drums/Percussion - David Johns
In the words of Starcoast: "This track was an older one that we decided, later on, to include on the EP after realizing we loved it. The lyrics reflect the struggle we go through as a DIY band, booking, promoting, recording, mixing, and creating most of our visual content, all while working regular jobs in the time when we're not touring. It's about persevering through that and just following the dream through without letting it break us."
LONG STORY SHORT: "Juxtaposition" is an incredibly relatable track for an independent musician trying to give music their absolute best shot. But it's also bigger than that. It's about anyone chasing a dream. At times it is challenging, but the more important is the perseverance.
